Celebs and former students, please contact Christine at sherwoodoakscollege@gmail.com or 323-878-2226. We are planning a memorial service and would like you to be part of it. Thank you!
Founded in 1971 by Gary Shusett, brother of famed screenwriter, Ronald Shusett, who wrote and produced Alien, Total Recall and Minority Report, Sherwood Oaks has been dedicated to jump-starting screenwriting careers ever since.
We are often asked why we charge so little for our courses, despite our proven track-record as star-makers. The simple truth is that with a genuine desire to see our students succeed, we simply donʼt believe in gauging writers who are already struggling to make their dreams come true. We believe in what we do, we believe in our students, and we will believe in you!

Many of his former students have become major Hollywood players including James Cameron, Dean Devlin, Paul Haggis, Nancy Meyers, Sylvester Stallone, etc. Gary Shusett has produced two movies (i.e., Final Terror, Moon Over Parador). His expertise in determining commercial ideas is so strong that Universal Studios offered him a job to just determine remakes that will make money.
Sherwood Oaks has been featured in People magazine and various screenwriting magazines. Gary Shusett and Sherwood Oaks College has been featured in various screenwriting books including Skip Press, Michael Hauge, and K. Callan.
When Michael Hauge was interviewed about how he started in the business and where he went to film school? He said “there was this great film school in Hollywood called Sherwood Oaks Experimental College which is actually a place that Syd Field, Bob McKee…we all sort of did our early teaching there, but I started out there taking classes.”
Sherwood Oaks works tirelessly to provide the best speakers to provide insight and push your Hollywood career to the next level. Our students have succeeded and we hope that you allow us to help you to succeed.
Gary Shusett’s philosophy is to get speakers who are very successful in the industry into a small setting giving screenwriters a rare opportunity to meet and give material to key players in Hollywood. He also does this at a very reasonable cost. Gary Shusett is deeply committed to seeing his students succeed in an altrustic manner.
